Come see where the classic American whistle is born!

That shiny silver whistle blown by police officers, gym teachers, referees, the Red Cross disaster workers, and dangling from women’s key rings all over the nation is born here in Columbus, Ohio! For over 50 years, AWC has been making these pretty little safety devices and shipping them all around the world.

american-whistle-corpEvery kid (and adult) who has ever blown a whistle has wondered how they get that little ball in there, why it can’t come out, and what it’s made of. Now you can find out the answers to all your whistle questions. View machinery both modern and vintage, and ask all the questions you like of their knowledgeable and friendly guides. Best of all, every tourist gets a shiny new whistle! (Parents, for your eardrums’ sake, you may want to confiscate these treasures BEFORE getting back in your car!)

The tours were only $6 per person (check for updated pricing), and can be scheduled Monday-Friday during business hours. If you don’t want to join another set of tourists, approximately $75 can get you a private tour. Homeschoolers take note: This tour can help fulfill fourth-grade curriculum requirements for social studies. Enjoy the whistles!

Visit the other Zoo at the Polaris Fashion Place in Columbus

polaris-mall-zoo

Polaris Zoo? Yes, although this mall is filled with upscale shops and restaurants, the first place the kids WE know want to go is the play area! Zoo-themed, it has a low-impact floor and soft play structures perfect for little ones. Animals and other zoo shapes to crawl on, jump off, and wiggle through to run off all that rainy day energy. Parents do have to supervise play, but you’d do that anywhere. Surrounded by cushy benches, parents can watch and give thumbs-ups in comfort.

We know, a mall isn’t the standard suggestion for a family rainy-day outing, but Polaris Fashion Place, locally known as Polaris Mall, is a new generation of mall and has this great free kid space for indoor play. North of Columbus, in northern Westerville, Polaris has become a destination mall.

If you do choose to spend a little, Polaris has rocking restaurants for meals, and every kind of shop under the sun. If you get their catalog, the store is here!

And if you dread shopping with kids, this play area is a great bribe for younger kids. Shop a little, and then let them run off their energy here…or wear them out and take them shopping while they’re asleep in their stroller!

The score is always love when you play tennis with your children at Schiller Park!

60 Days of Summer Columbus OH Fun Activities To Do

Columbus OH Huntington Garden in Schiller ParkCome enjoy a spirited round of tennis with the kids, then stick around for the playground and picnic area and make a day of it.

Schiller is the second oldest park in the City of Columbus, obtained in 1867, just after the Civil War.

The park boasts a rec center, picnic areas, fishing pond, lighted tennis courts, a stage for the Actor’s Summer Theater, playground, and beautiful flower gardens.

The stage hosts the Columbus tradition, Shakespeare in the Park, all through the summer. There are also various concerts and events free to the public that are held here.

Pets are welcome, with proper shots and tags, and there are nice fields for games of flying discs and tag with your pooch.

Jogging/Walking paths are not terribly long, but are circular, so you can go ’til you drop if you like. The landscaping makes it a lovely place to stroll, through flowers, trees, and fields, and are ADA accessible for those of us with disabilities or small children in strollers.

The playground is a local favorite, with plenty of benches and places to sit for watchful parents.

Close to all that German Village offers, this park is great fun on its own, or in tandem with a trip to the Village, too.

A three season park, the bitter cold would make an indoor venue a better choice in winter, but the gardens are designed for three season enjoyment, as are the paved trails.
