Real Estate Fact: One of the reason brass doorknobs are so popular is that they are antimicrobial. They can disinfect themselves!

Expanded Fact: Tested.com talks about how brass, used in doorknobs and other items, has an antimicrobial property that allows it to completely disinfect itself in about 8 hours, and starts to disinfect within 15 minutes. This is only true for non-lacquered, clean or “bright” brass. Once lacquered or oxidized, the metal stops being able to disinfect itself, and needs to be either polished clean of oxidation, or cleaned regularly with a disinfectant to be truly clean.

Fun Fact: Stainless steel or brushed aluminum doorknobs do NOT disinfect themselves…tested.com describes them as “hotbeds of bacteria”! Ew.
