Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and though our mixed bag of mild/cold weather will continue this month, you know spring is just around the corner. While you wait for the consistently good weather, take advantage of these February activities, many of which are free or budget friendly.

All Month – Adults and Teens – The Wexner Center presents a short film called Youngstown/Steel Town (2016), which examines “the evolution of an Ohio rust belt city.” This is a free event. For more information, see this Wexner Center web page.

February 1 and 29 (4-10 p.m.) – for Adults – It’s time for Short North Gallery Hop Saturday! Because this is a leap-year, the event happens twice this month. Galleries stay open late, there are street performers, vendors, shopping, food and drink. This great neighborhood experience buzzes with excitement every year! Sunday, February 2 – Ages 13-18 – The Wexner Center presents a Creative Writing Workshop with Claudia Owusu – The Center’s first WexLab this month is a creative writing studio. Journals and all other needed supplies are provided. And while they last, there will also be free goodies to eat. Registration is required. See this Wexner web page to register.

Fridays – for All – Beginning on February 7 at the Old Worthington Library, come, cozy up to the fire with the family, and listen to great music that features some of our area’s most talented musicians. These weekly events run from 4-5 p.m. Musicians this month include Joey Hebdo, Stephanie Jeffreys, Dan Rowan, and Delyn Christian. The library is located at 820 High Street, Worthington OH, 43085. February 8 and Various Other Dates/Times – for All – Take a guided walk-in tour of the Wexner Gallery with knowledgeable docents. The tours are free with gallery admission, and gallery admission is free on Thursday evenings. This month the tours are available on February 8, 13, and 23. February 14 – Please see our Valentine’s Day events post for all the possibilities. Be sure to book early!

February 17 – for All – Explore Ohio’s presidential heritage and enjoy various programs at Ohio Presidents Day, taking place at the Ohio History Center History Museum, located at 800 E. 17th Ave. in Columbus. The hours are from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and this special day features rare objects from The Harding Collection, a presentation called Regiment of Presidents, and more. An educational and interesting day for the whole family. Additional information can be found on the Ohio History Collection’s website.

February 17 – for All – When is the last time you and your family went to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium? Would you like to go for free? On President’s Day, you and the family can do just that! You will need to pay $10 per vehicle for parking (if you’re a non-member). You may be surprised how many animals thrive in the cold weather, and what their natural habitats look like. February 25 – for All – Gaelic Storm, a Celtic band from Santa Monica, California, bring their traditional Irish and Scottish music to the Newport Music Hall in Columbus.  Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are on sale now at $25. Please visit this Ticketmaster site for more information.

February 29 – for Adults – If you like wine and the idea of benefitting the CD102.5 for the Kids charity, make your way to the Columbus Winter Wine Festival on February 29. Costs for this event, taking place at Brewmasters Gate (495 S. Front St., Columbus), range between $15-30. The event is broken up into two sessions: 12-4 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. In addition to getting 10 wine sample tickets, you will get a commemorative wine sampling glass. What better way to gear up for the spring, than saying goodbye to the winter with happy spirits! Full information and tickets can be found on this Eventbrite web page.
